New Jerusalem
  JERRY BROWNING

 NAKED DREAMS

New Jerusalem

priests defiled the temple,
kings tarnished golden rings
satisfied the vile peasant’s
saviored souls would keep
but knowledge set them free

across the shadow's valley
to lands without birthright,
wanderers who dug in deep
found treasure with a price,
scruples petrified by might

unleashed, the black rock genie
cares not the holder’s needs
consuming whims and wishes
to selfish merchant’s glee
fueling ignorance with greed

canaan’s come of age now
fertile, glowing virgin bride
haggard matrons pray to see her
slash-faced and terrorized,
abr'am’s altered sacrifice
