Left Lane
  JERRY BROWNING

 BROKEN COMPASS

Left Lane

                        I

wake up my son
time to run
breathe wild breeze
thru tingling lungs
roll up camp
chart your course
map intuition
polarize compass
to sinless submission

white lines
stop signs
speeding to find
a bridge never crossed
a mountain unclimbed

old winds moan

thru open car windows

            gypsy generation

            you’re lost

            turn back…

            have you no visions?

rain blurs the glass
don’t over-react
zz…if wishes were fishes
all nets would be cast…zz
turn the radio down
wiper blades howl
steady ol’ boy
steady ‘er now

II

smoke bleeds off

the last horizon

faces seem ugly

black moon’s a risin’

can’t feel the road

‘neath burning feet

floorboard a thumpin’

in insane beats

crossroads sever

awkward precision

like heartless brain surgeon’s

virgin incision

chaos…

ask no questions

tell no lies

wheels dizzily spin

like dead men’s eyes

feel no pain

no resistance

lights disappear

to a point

in the distance

Houston, Texas ‘82
